Colposcopy consists of observation through a microscope or magnifying lens that allows the tissues to be visualized at a larger size and that serves to detect both benign and malignant lesions at the level of the neck, vagina and vulva.
- It is performed in women with alterations detected in the Pap smear or at risk of having infection by the human papillomavirus.
- Colposcopy is painless and is performed in a few minutes, is safe and does not require hospitalization.
When the presence of human papillomavirus in the cervix or vagina is established, a biopsy guided by colposcopy (take a piece using a special clamp), in this way the pathologist who is in charge of analyzing the tissue sent can tell us with certainty what degree of progress the lesion has.
Why is it so important to establish the degree of human papillomavirus infection? Because depending on the degree, it will be the necessary treatment, not taking a biopsy exposes us to not treat properly, bone undertrease.
- In the case of men,we have Androscopy that consists of the observation of the penis with a magnifying microscope that allows to identify lesions associated with the human papillomavirus in the glans and foreskin.
- A written report with the description of the characteristics of the cervix is delivered, in printed format when leaving the consultation.
In the attached images we can see some examples of positive colposcopies for human papillomavirus, periodic reviews are very important, because the human papillomavirus is the cause of cervical cancer and discomfort is not usually present until they are already very advanced stages.
